Hello Eamgr: It can be for as long as you choose to continue...

Is it an SSRI? They can take a long time to take effect, in my case at least 2 months to feel any change at all (increasing dose helps a bit). My drs have always advised at least a year. But it's up to you.
Thanks for this!

Yes in case your doctor didn't explain it to you, it can take six to eight weeks to feel some positive effects. You may or may not have some unpleasant side effects immediately. These usually subside in a week or so. Report any side effects to your pdoc and hang in with it. If you have supportive people around enlist their help, sometimes they will notice signs of improvement before you do. If they notice positive changes, they should let you know so it can bolster your confidence. Good luck!

Hi

Yeah dr said it will take about 4 weeks to start feeling the benefits. The first few days however are likely to make it worse. So I'm prepared

Thing is I knew it was going to happen but hoping it wasn't. I was avoiding it asap but can't deal with it anymore. It was a bit of a shock that he said possibly for 2 years will just have to see. I don't mind though if it means my life gets back on track.

That is a good frame of mind. Give it a chance, in a few months you can evaluate: is it helping, are there side effects, do you want to continue.

The right med can offer a path back to a "normal" existence where one is able to feel joy, be sad, laugh, cry, and participate in life again. Good luck to you.

I hope the meds help you. I have been on meds for a while now and I do believe they help me. At one time I did not want to take meds but now I figure that if medicine helps me live a better, happier, more productive life than I will take the meds. Good luck.
