Went to the ER last night on recommendation from my psychologist. It was a terrible experience. Filled with people who weren't trained to adequately respond to a mental health crisis or had an attitude that was thoroughly unhelpful for the situation. I had a friend who works in the mental health field with me to advocate (and she advocated aggressively) and we both left angry, me more distressed than when I arrived, with no solutions that originated from the hospital. We both thought - what about the people who don't have someone to help?

That's terrible but it's the truth about many ERs. You get stupid people who don't know what to do or you can get scared aggressive people who lock you in a room and post security outside the door. How to treat mental illness needs to be part of the training curriculum at medical and nursing school, more than a couple hours too.
