Hey everyone,
do you know for which type of depression is ECT used for?
Does it have to be psychotic depression or what?

I had ECT for severe depression that wasn't getting any better with meds or other options. It was a last resort treatment. I got so bad that I was in the hospital, had stopped eating, and even stopped chewing my nails (a big sign, since I always chew my nails).

So nope, it doesn't need to be psychotic depression. Not even sure if they use ECT for psychotic depression, but I have no clue.

ECT worked very well by the way, but it shouldn't be the first line of treatment.

I had ECT initially for a bout of severe, suicidal depression. It didn't seem to help although it did take away my suicidal thoughts. When I became suicidally depressed again I tried ECT again and realized how much it really worked. I have continued to have maintenance ECT for the past 2 years and have been doing well. I am not depression free and I still do take medication, but the ECT has been wonderful for me.

I was recommended for ECT by my meds doctor. My therapist (different person) was strongly against it as she wanted to see if DBT would help first.

She won out, I postponed ECT and tried DBT. DBT was enough to get me past most of my demons. I still have sui-thought but no actions on it for a couple of years now.

Personally, I view ECT as a last option. Primarily because if you read up on it the "doctors" in the know will admit they do not know how or IF ECT works. One step ahead of leaches in my opinion. But if you are stuck in crisis mode - then I say go for it.

Actually ECT in my opinion is a godsend. I tried DBT but my suicidal depression was too deep to even make a dent. After having ECT i probably would do better with the DBT, but for now the ECT is working and with minimal side effects. Good luck to you both.
