Dear Dr. Clay,
I believe that we are all devinely led to the right place at the right time. I have been feeling quite depressed for some time now and through this channel was led to your book. I have scanned over it and read some areas. I believe it will help me to self-help myself and plan to study it. I just wanted to thank you for being my Angel today by posting your book on this site.
Sincerely,
needing a self-help book

To date I have found no search topic regarding mental health challenges that I couldn't find first at PsychCentral.

A big thank you to DocJohn and all the authors who help keep the information coming. My weekly email newsletter is always a welcome site in my Inbox.

I have found a number of great people in various groups on facebook. I've even started my own group focused on helping people overcome depression. The group is titled Cure Your Depression. It's brand new and I welcome anyone interested in it to join and participate.

Dear DocJohn,I am a fairly recent [July 2009] member of NeuroTalk/PsychCentral, which I love. This, I believe, is another Doc-John-Headed forum? You are the bomb!I know of no other forums and feel a need for no other. I believe I am going to love PsychCentral! I am very computer-disabled, but I found my way here, through efforts to add my 2 cents to an article in the PsychCentral Newsletter, which I somehow began receiving in my e-mail. It is most helpful. I just joined PsychCentral a few minutes ago, 9-13-09. Thanks Much for All That You Do! billieJ

I have written a long chapter on Depression in my book (see the link below.) I hope it is helpful. There are many sources of help--therapy, groups, readings, friends and caring loved ones. If you can think of important ways to reduce the awful feelings of depression, please share your wisdom and personal experiences with me directly or on the Sharing Self-Help Ideas forum.

"How could you not bow in front of such a human being (Dr. Clay Tucker-Ladd)! This is a great work, done by a brilliant mind, with deep ideas that point to a better humanity and to a better person. But it’s not only that. I found outstanding the idea of UPDATING, improving the knowledge that was transmitted by the book - “Psychological Self-Help”- after refining the new discoveries, validated by time and experts in the field, through the great experience of the author. I wish to see that done in any field; now that Internet and thoughtful-to-the-best-of-all-and-brilliant people allow us to have access to their achieved-and-enhanced knowledge.

Achievements and knowledge without soul means nothing to me! But reading from the book (work) and applying the advice there, reading Dr. Clay’s biography that shows his determination in helping others; it is lifting my mood and “increasing my serotonin” more than any pill or advice! J Am I bipolar or something? I don’t think so! But I think a little help in having a better assessment now would be desired! It’s not the first time I wonder how crazy I am and in what regard…!
And how can I not be excited, when I see such great people still existing! I felt the same when learning about Einstein, Stephen Hawking (Usually I write his name with an –s, even though I have seen it so many times. Probably I need a “-s” to express his many dimensions development J as a human being), and from the Brancatan (co.uk) site or Andrew Vachss’ site or other great people that I love, admire for works and attitude like a person during their life. Too bad Mendeleev (oh, my God, WORD heard about… Mendeleev! “That was amazing!” Shall I check if they heard about Mangele too? Maybe it’s better not to! He wanted to be remembered as a brilliant mind no matter how much harm he did! And for that reason better not to be added, not even like an EVIL example!) We still have the dynamic “periodic table of elements” wonderful site as an updated, enchanted work of Mendeleev, connected to Wikipedia!
I wonder if Dr. Clay’s work COULD, and WOULD be transformed in something similar in every-day or self-help psychology science."

As a "Thank You" I just copied from my journal (I like to call it my Red Book :-)) I am sure Dr. Clay will understand my homage.

I found that livedepressionsupportgroup.com was helpful. I kind of like the anonymous chat sessions. Sometimes its easier to be unknown. And its free.

I like a lot these words; but I can not make sense of the above underline sentence. Could you please explain it?

Thanks for all!

  • Do not set difficult goals for yourself, or take on additional responsibility.
  • Break large tasks into small ones, set some priorities, and do what you can as you can.
  • Do not expect too much from yourself too soon, as this will only increase your feelings of failure.
  • Try to be with other people; it is usually better than being alone.
  • Force yourself to participate in activities that may make you feel better.
  • Try engaging in mild exercise, going to a movie, a ball-game, or participating in religious or social activities.
  • Don't overdo it or get upset if your mood is not greatly improved right away. Feeling better takes time.
  • Do not make major life decisions, such as changing jobs, getting married or divorced, without consulting others who know you well and who have a more objective view of your situation. In any case, it is advisable to postpone important decisions until your depression has lifted.
  • Do not expect to snap out of your depression. People rarely do. Help yourself as much as you can, and do not blame yourself for not being up to par.
  • Remember, do not accept your negative thinking. It is part of the depression and will disappear as your depression responds to treatment.
  • Get help from a professional. No matter how much you want to beat it yourself, a psychologist can help you recover faster.
