Depression is a very natural part of the human existence. Of course when it a great part of your life and is interfering with your lifestyle that may be time to seek professional help. Not only do meds need to be prescribed either individual thererapy, group support groups or other educational supportive classes to help I a a firm believer in sharing with one another our challenges. I do believe it is good to meet others with our same struggles as long as we set boundaries and keep our relationships in a healthy way. Sometimes we can help, encourage and strengthen one another. If one is closed or not interested in developing a closer relationship we have to accept that If O decide to go I want to listen and learn.

With or without meds, we still have stuff happen to us that's no fun. The first time I worked for a lawyer who was going to take someone to court, I had to fill out the Subpoena and all the forms [this was the Middle Ages, like 1975] and then he dictated the Complaint. I could understand all the things the other guy had done to the innocent client -- and I was almost weeping! It was terrible! What I didn't know was that this was standard legal language. In a Complaint, everything is egregious, i.e., really awful! So the lawyer gets the papers ready, signs them, sends a runner to court. Then he breaks for lunch, comes out of his office with a big smile!
I finally got it that we JUST DO IT. When there are things I don't want to do and I'm suffering from the resistance, JUST DO IT. Try to jump over the temptation to think too hard about how awful it is. A lot of my depression is based on stuff that happened to me. So I try to communicate, register my displeasure, ask my questions, write the letters WITHOUT GETTING BENT OUTTA SHAPE. Meet the deadlines, pay the bills or at least stick them up as a reminder -- or tell the folks you're trying! When that's done, then try to have some fun. If it's only working a jigsaw. Some of my favorite websites: Emma One-Sock (beautiful fabric for sewing), Farmhouse Fabrics (ditto), Baba-Mail (interesting pictures and input -- travel, history, architecture, cute animals, serious animals), Pogo (games), Neiman-Marcus (you can click on the models and make them dance! A blouse costs more than your rent, but it's all very nice.], BBC for news, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care [cameras on animals, archived stories, I work for them], Ferrari [listen to the motor!], spiritual websites -- Stewart Wilde, my teacher, died last May, but his website is still up and his colleagues and students are also very interesting. . . I love to search on antique dolls on eBay and look at the results. Etsy and Pinterest I don't really understand, but for sure there's color and clever things to look at. Hi
I found this site of the Mental Health Association (Australia). It has useful information Mental Health Association NSW __________________ Clara Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. I have been reading (lack of concentration keeps me from remembering much) Deepak Chopra's philosophies concerning mind body spirit balance. I feel as a depressed person I am definitely out of balance. He discusses how when one finds their soul they begin to feel better about themselves. I suspect this to be true however given my mood and disorders I can't practice what he preaches as I don't feel anything. Anyway that's what i'm (trying) reading....

Hi doxiemom.
I don't really understand what D.C. is saying about finding your soul. But it does sound somewhat poetic, so definitely is food for the artistic soul. If I have trouble concentrating on what I am reading, I usually picture my significant other laying me across their lap, with warm tropical winds swirling the sand across their toes; of course under the gently waving fronds of a tall palm. And my sig regales me in dulcet tones of the media I have chosen to peruse. It either tricks me into concentrating harder, or it causes me to explore more active persuits with my significant other. After which, I find my concentration fully restored! Anyway I thought I would share what works for me; at the very least it is a laugh! |

I was doing some research on cortisol in depressed people and how antidepressant affect cortisol levels and stumbled upon this one. It seems interesting and I have found some good information there: Surviving Antidepressants

facingus.org : has a wellness tracker, you can keep a journal here - useful
also samaritans.org : uk-based, can send email to "joe" (an anonymous volunteer) about your depression, and suicidal feelings. They email a compassionate, thoughtful response w/in 24 hours - I find they are professional and extremely empathetic and caring. beyondblue - Home is another great resource (from Australia, but helpful anywhere) also, Black Dog Tribe from the UK great place for fellow sufferers of mental illness to learn and communicate Black Dog Tribe |
