Depression Forum:

I have been impressed with many of the genuinely empathic responses on this forum. Most supportive responses sound like they really know the feeling of depression. So, do I because I have talked to and treated thousands of depressed people.

I have written a long chapter on Depression in my book (see the link below.) I hope it is helpful. There are many sources of help--therapy, groups, readings, friends and caring loved ones. If you can think of important ways to reduce the awful feelings of depression, please share your wisdom and personal experiences with me directly or on the Sharing Self-Help Ideas forum.

I'm sorry, but "talking to and treating thousands of depressed people" and being depressed yourself are two entirely different things. You can be empathic all you want, but you can't get it unless you've been through it, and it's wrong to say you understand if all you've done is listen to other people talk about it. It's like trying to say you understand what it's like to give birth just from having watched videos of it.

I found the Depression Fallout Message Board very helpful. It focuses on helping the family and love ones of people suffering from depression. It was from there that I learned a lot about depression and prompted me to seek help for myself. I've also read Anne Sheffield's Depression Fallout Book and thought it was great.

Anne Sheffield's Books

Candybear, she is a sufferer herself and I liked that about the book.

Just For Today I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for 12 hours that would appall me it I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
Just for Today I will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that, "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be."
Just for Today I will adjust myself to what is and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will take my "Luck" as it comes, and fit myself to it.
Just for Today I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
Just for Today I will exercise my soul in 3 ways. I will do somebody a good turn, and not get found out; it anybody knows of it, it will not count. I will do at least 2 things I do not want to do - just for exercise. I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt, they may be hurt, but today I will not show it.
Just for Today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, not find fault with anything and not try to improve or regulate anybody except myself.
Just for Today I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from 2 pests hurry and indecision.
Just for Today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself, and relax. During this half hour, some time, I will try to get a better perspective of my life.
Just for Today I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, & to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me. Top Depression Resources Online -- Add yours here!

I've been looking for months and have found two that are outstanding. The first one (MentalEarth) is fairly well known, but the second (InnerBonding) is just as good but overlooked somehow.

I really like this PsychCentral the best as far as communities. But here are 2 sites I find are helpful for researching psych meds before making a change. Obviously need to take into consideration that more unhappy users will report on side effects because the ones that feel great on a med are more likely to be out living life. Still many of the reviews are fairly balanced and I just like reading other's experiences before agreeing to a med change.

Dear Dr. Clay,
I believe that we are all devinely led to the right place at the right time. I have been feeling quite depressed for some time now and through this channel was led to your book. I have scanned over it and read some areas. I believe it will help me to self-help myself and plan to study it. I just wanted to thank you for being my Angel today by posting your book on this site.
Sincerely,
needing a self-help book
