I have been wanting to tell people what to do when they have someone they know become depressed.

As for me, I worked high-stress jobs for 16 years. It finally became too much and my persistent depression kicked into high gear. All my friends left me. My family was the only one that stuck around. They helped me contact a psychiatrist and start searching for a medication to help. But, that was only the beginning. I needed more.
Now, after 12 years I feel cognizant enough to be able to try to help others. What do people need to know?
