Hi, so the last few days, I have been sleeping 8-10 hours a day and still feel so tired and can't do anything even though I have slept a lot and should have "recharged" me. This has made me not have time to do school work or the gym and it frustrates me. I have been in school for about a month now, and this has just started a few days ago. I don't know what it is, but this is how I was when I was in severe depression. I would sleep but nothing would change except lose time in the day.
I take coffee to stay awake, as I have morning classes, but still feel like I'm going to pass out due to exhaustion. I am seeing a new psychiatrist in a month, which I feel lucky about since most of the time, it takes me a few months of waiting before I get to meet them, but I was just added and was told I could see them in a month. But I'm scared something may be up and am afraid it's going to harm me waiting for a month. How can I get my energy back? Also, I have noticed that I just keep eating, and have ended up gaining a pound per day the last week, which isn't normal. I just want to eat. I hate depression...

Hi-are you on any antidepressant?
Wellbutrin is one that helps you stop overeating. I can’t have it because I’m bipolar, but my regular doc prescribed it for me once to help me lose weight and it is also an antidepressant . Maybe you can be seen by a regular doc to help you out before you get to the psychiatrist? Try some upbeat music and walking outdoors. I’m so sorry you are suffering ![]() |

Sleeping a lot and still feeling tired is a classic sign of depression for me. I can't take Wellbutrin on a regular basis because it pushes me into hypomania. I do take it for 2 or 3 days when I'm in a really bad funk and it helps me climb out of the depression hole I fell into. I took one this morning because I've been in a deep dark depression since last Thursday and I don't want it to drag on into weeks or months.

Hi. Yes, I am on an antidepressant. I'm on Effexor XR at 75mg. I had a lot of issues from March to June regarding depression. My family doesn't believe in mental illness, and believed that taking medication for it wasn't worth it as it was the same as a "placebo", so I was taken off of it, and became severely depressed. And then the one that I was one that was working for me didn't work anymore, so I switched around until I ended up on Effexor XR. I don't think I can be on an antidepressant and Wellbutrin at the same time. My old pdoc told me I couldn't be on a stimulant and Effexor XR at the same time because I could have too high blood pressure, because Effexor raises serotonin and norepinephrine while a stimulant raises dopamine, but dopamine converts into norepinephrine, and both dopamine and norepinephrine increase blood pressure. I have wanted to be on a stimulant thing before, and even brought up Wellbutrin to my first pdoc but she said that I wasn't depressed and I didn't have AD/HD so it wouldn't help me. I'm just unsure about changing medications again, as being off one last time caused severe depression, and I can't really deal with that ever, but not right now either. I'm thinking it could be SAD, not that I have been diagnosed with this, but a few years ago, I got depressed in the winter for two/three years, and it went away last year. I don't know. I do see a pdoc in a month though. I can ask the psychologist about it to see what he thinks. I do do a lot of walking, as I have to walk to all my classes. Thank you for your advice.

Hi. Thank you, I do know that my sleeping a lot and feeling tired of signs of depression, but I am having a hard time decoding whether or not I do feel depressed, because I tend to always be in a negative state of mind, just mildly though. I don't feel the same in terms of how my head felt the last depressive episode. I do miss doing pleasurable things because I sleep a lot now and don't have time or energy to do things I would normally be doing. I'm thinking that the weather has something to do with it, as it has just recently been getting colder here in Canada, and also darker earlier, and this has happened a few years ago, just not last year for some reason. Thank you for your response.

Also, maybe you could go to your GP/family doctor sooner. They aren't as specialized obviously, but might be able to check a few things or give you some interim suggestions or support. Both for the sleep and weight gain issues. Take care. |

Yes, I do struggle with social anxiety, but I have noticed an increase of tiredness and need for sleep in the last week or so. Today I did notice the sadness and negatively more. Maybe it is depression... I am going to see my family doctor this weekend, as I had an issue this weekend in terms of blood sugar that I need to fix. My gp isn't helpful for mental illness stuff... she doesn't know how to help, as I have asked her previously and she just said that she couldn't help and I'd have to pay for it, even though when I asked someone else, they said I could do what I said needed to be done. Sigh. I will see my psychologist this week and see what he says. Thank you.
