Things have gotten really bad today. Things have just seemed to come to an emotional head. I just started an antidepressant. About 11 days ago. It took away my libido. It's not helping yet. I am so so upset, like beside myself, that I don't feel able to do social things. I'm so lonely. I hate it. I feel like I'm in Hell. I'm so sick of being a mentally ill person. I'm sick of not getting the help I need too. Someone please respond with help or encouragement.

Well, 11 days is a short time for some medications to work.

If you have faith on them, it's gonna take some months.
Thanks for this!

Hi starry. I'm also a few weeks into my first-ever antidepressant, and it's very strange. I also feel worse, in a way.

It might be that the drug is adding a layer of tiredness to my already exhausted state. I wanted to feel better, not so zonked-out that I'd have to struggle even harder to get through my working day.

Also, having admitted I need an antidepressant makes me feel vulnerable. I can't throw myself into pretending everything is fine.

I've heard a lot of places that this is to be expected, so I promised myself I wouldn't panic until 4 weeks has passed (for some people, 6).

Yeah so hang in there, if you can.

to you, starrysky. The first 3 weeks of my current antidepressant made me feel similar to you. Were you the one that had unpleasant associations with Prozac? Apologies if you weren't...I remember someone saying weeks back that they got triggered just by the thought of taking Prozac specifically, which is what I'm on currently. Either way, I think it was week 5 or 6 when you're supposed to know whether or not the medicine is doing its job (week 5 for me).

Meds aside, for being in that all-too-familiar frustrating place. You're a bright spot on these forums.

I agree with the previous posts, give it more time.
If you feel markedly worse, contact your pdoc; you may be having a not-so-helpful reaction to the med.

That was me. I had a weird reaction to it. So now I'm on lexapro.

And, thank you. It's really nice to hear I brighten some people's experiences here.

Thanks everyone. It's been a hard day. I heard lexapro can start working after 2 weeks. I will talk to my dr. about the libido. I went for a walk with my mom and now listening to On Being's podcast. A recommendation from somebody here.
