I have been going to talk therapy since October 2017 after experiencing a nervous breakdown a few months prior. I'm emotionally and physically depleted (though a bit better), but still experience weekly panic attacks and unstable mood -- between swings of depression and anxiety/panic, crying spells etc.

Therapy has been extremely helpful and it's been very relieving. However, on a physical and mental level I am fatigued with all these symptoms.

I want to try an antidepressant to hopefully get me back to functioning mode, but will it interfere with therapy in any way? Do antidepressants interfere with your natural emotions/mood? I don't want to put a band aid on anything I may be feeling deep down, as this is important to the psychotherapy process.

My observation is that antidepressants have highly individual effects. A medication that affects one person one way can affect another in the opposite manner. Antidepressants are often said to complement therapy well, but there is no way to predict your experience.

Rohaq's reply is excellent.

Some people feel an emotional numbness and/or blunting with certain antidepressants at certain dosages. Others feel a fuller range of emotions. Responses to meds are very individualized.

Have you talked about your concerns with your therapist?

I wish you a complete recovery.
Please take good care of yourself.

Thank you for your response.

I have talked a tiny bit about meds with my psychiatrist, but I am seeing him tomorrow and will bring up a whole discussion as this is very important to me.

Your response is one I get frequently, so I have to just weigh my options and make the best decision for myself I can.

Thanks again

I am currently on antidepressants and find them helpful. I tend to not have the high highs or low lows. So I'm not numbing out, but am restricting my emotion levels...if that makes sense.

I did have other antidepressants that did numb me out to where I didn't feel anything. So if you do try them, see how you feel or don't feel and keep in touch with your psychiatrist about making adjustments or changes to your meds.

He gave me a Prozac prescription, but I've been hesitant about taking it. I'm in a ****** mood about my whole situation, I feel regretful about the way things have gone. I'll probably end up taking it, I just can't make up my mind anymore about anything.
