I am new on here and am not sure how it all works. I am typically a shy person and don't really have anyone around me to talk to other than going to the bar and seeing the usual people whose name I know.
Is this a place where I would find a social outlet?

There are chat rooms here that are good for social interaction click on "Chat Rooms" in the bottom right corner of the browser window to enter.

For IRL social interaction have you tried meetup.com?

Here, you can PM other people and use the cat. IRL, you can visit some new places, perhaps join some new activities, go to the gym, anything that lets you meet other people.
