Do you think the sadness creeps up and gets you... or do you think you go looking for the sadness? I feel like it’s both. The sadness gets me at all kinds of times, good and bad. But I am also starting to think that I do look for reasons to hold myself back and stay stuck in the sadness.

I know the sadness finds me, and I think I find it sometimes too, because even if painful it's known and I would rather be in a place with which I am familiar than some place new and frightening.

Both. Something small can trigger me to being sad when I'm otherwise feeling just fine. Then on the other hand, I'll do things I know might make me sad, but I still do them anyways. The sadness is sometimes comforting... I've been there so much that I'm getting used to it, as twisted as that sounds. It feels so strange to be in a good mood.

It’s true about familiarity, even if it’s not a good place...

I have to agree that it is a combination of both. There is a saying that goes like this: Life is only 10% what happens to us and 90% our attitudes toward it. Sure, many "sad" things happen, but our attitudes toward them determines our reactions.

Not an easy thing to deal with sometimes, I know.

I don't know.

for me it's a case of thinking about something for an extended amount of time (something that makes me sad), like my life (or lack of), and it just gets to be very upsetting in the end.

most of my depression isn't situational. most of my depression is caused by the past and the abuse I suffered, etc
