Hi, I'm wondering if anyone else has any experience with metabolic syndrome caused by remeron? I'm taking 45 mg daily and within about six months I have gained twenty-five pounds, I now require high blood pressure medication, high cholesterol medication, and I have become pre-diabetic. I weigh 150 lbs, female, 5'8" tall. My psychiatrist prescribed metformin to counteract the effects but I can't take it because it made me feel weak and faint.

It seems obvious to me that I should not be taking a medication that causes me to develop these health problems but remeron has helped my depression a lot and even though I feel well enough now I'm probably going to have problems again if I discontinue it.

I have an appointment with my psychiatrist and my gp to discuss which is the best way to go but I think it will come down to making a judgment call and would welcome any input from you all.

Thanks

You could ask your doctor about dropping to 30mg. Remeron is just weird. Between 15mg, 30 and 45 I have three completely different sets of side effect profiles. I gained a lot of weight on Remeron and switching doses fixed that.

If that doesn't work, it sounds like you need something else. Unless you think what you are experiencing is a good trade-off and that is something only you can answer.

Good luck

Thanks, I've tried so many other meds besides remeron with no real relief that I'm willing to put up with some unwanted side effects in order to lift my mood. I guess I need to assess how risky the metabolic syndrome is to my health. On the one hand I'd rather be depressed than have a stroke but I wouldn't mind being fat and happy if that's all there is to it.
