Sometimes, most of the time, I find pc to be a wonderful support group. It’s been much more helpful to me than professional input.... (in the uk )

Do you feel that support groups, online or in “real” life have the potential to be supportive, caring, affirming, evolving, tolerant, creative, fair...all the things that professional help/support is supposed to be?

What other qualities do you like to find in a support group (or in a professional)?

What do you give to a support group?

Love to all

Btw this post is open to all. I’m hopeful we can all support each other.

But why would I think everyone would want to support me. I always was “unlikeable” - I’ve been trained well as this being my default position

Fuzzy, I think support groups have the potential to be all of those things you mentioned in your post, with the caveat that they are only as good, and good-hearted, as the people in them.

One thing I like about groups such as this one is they minimize the potential for one-to-one dysfunctional manipulation and misunderstanding. You will get a number of points of view for the issues you bring up and can compare others' viewpoints with your own.

Then hopefully you too have a chance to contribute to others, at the same time you get feedback on your own issues.

This forum also seems to have responsible oversight by the administrators, which is so, SO important, I think.

Have an excellent day! Thanks for bringing this up.

Good topic FuZzy. I definitely get a lot of help from this online support forum. I love hearing the different perspectives on an issue I am having. I also enjoy adding my own perspectives in the hopes I can help others. Individual therapy has been a disappointment and frustration for me. Just the other day I was thinking about the other things I could do with the money I would spend on a therapist and how that could possibly benefit me more than paying for therapy...

PC posters are supportive
We have shared experiences
So we know what support means
Posters bring inspiration for our thoughts
And insight to our darkest times

Thank you everyone for being here

PC is the only psych support group to which I've belonged.
Many formal and informal associations - clubs and the like, even some workplaces - serve as functional support groups.
I don't expect a cure here.
I do expect a community of people with whom I share a few commonalities of existence.
