I’m cross posting this with the work and careers page since it relates to depression too. I haven’t been here in a while so hello again to everyone. Here is what’s going on.
I just got a new job. I’ve worked there for one week (mon-fri). It’s in a field that I haven’t really worked in before and I’m not sure if I want to. It’s my first job out of college and it’s a professional, business casual environment. This makes me so nervous because I don’t feel like I belong and I’ve only ever worked in casual environments (like in the service industry). The more training I do, the more I think I can’t / don’t want to do this job. But it’s the most responsible decision and I need the money. Plus it’s a seasonal position anyway. My problem is that I keep messing things up. I’ve been late to work every day so far, each time closer to being on time so at least it might seem like I’m trying. But I’m still getting used to traffic patterns and getting up for work everyday (which, with depression is difficult though I realize not an excuse is a professional situation). I feel so unprepared and unable to do this job. I haven’t completed my documents which are past due and I called out of training this week. They were understanding about it but I know deep down they’re annoyed but have to stay professional. I’m ruining my reputation and chance at doing well at this job already and it’s been five days. How can I get over this? Please no comments telling me I’m lazy or ungrateful. I’m aware. I just want advice if you have any to offer. Last edited by pixiedust72; May 20, 2019 at 07:09 PM.. |

You're not lazy or ungrateful. It sounds like you're trying your best and with depression sometimes that's all you can do.
I think you should stick it out with this job. Figure out what exactly is causing problems and implement a plan to fix it. E.g. if it's being behind on paperwork come up with a schedule to help get you back on track or even work with a boss to figure out how you can get back on track. |
