My husband has been diagnosed with depression. He’s talked a lot about feeling he needs to just be alone and get away from everything to see how he feels. He’s not sleeping well and thinks he will sleep better away (and feels he can sort out other things). He told me this morning that his therapist told him he should go away somewhere alone for a week. He said he agrees. Is this a normal suggestion from a therapist? I don’t ask about his therapy but he does bring it up. Just some things he has told me don’t seem like things a therapist would say.

Sounds very reasonable, give your husband some space.

Usually therapists don't tell you what you should do, they give you the tools to make good decisions. Did he mention getting away before...the therapist suggested it?

He’s been talking about seeing how he would feel on his own for awhile. I am sure he’s been telling his therapist as well.

I don't know if the T would "tell" your husband to get away for a week. Sometimes they make suggestions, but usually don't give flat out advice unless it's life or death. Like get back on your meds, or go to the hospital right away. It sounds like this is something your husband wants to do. Maybe it would be helpful to him....maybe not. But maybe it is something he needs to try for himself. HUGS Kit

From what I understand about therapy, a therapist would not directly tell him to leave and be on his own for a week. I think this is just what he heard because that is what he wanted to hear. I don’t want to push but also want to tell him this.
