'The River' by Bruce Springsteen always hit me for it's message of opportunity taken away by the fates...but the ending has a message of strength and hope. Perseverance in the face of hard times I guess. At times it can make me awful melancholy. Blue collar families having lives compromised by economic downturns...there are a lot of songs in this vein but the whole composition here hits me...the music sets the tone for the lyrics. Bittersweet but not defeated. I like the way it makes me feel but it hurts too.

@Albatross Yea, me! Great song even though it's very sad. This song came out in early 1976. The song was written about the death of Brian Wilson's (of the Beach Boys) dog named Shannon. Henry Gross was with the group Sha-Na-Na, who had an half-hour TV show performing popular 1950's songs and comedy skits. Henry left that group in 1970 before they became popular.
I personally didn't know he was with Sha-Na-Na. I thought he was formally with the Beach Boys. He had that kind of voice for the Beach Boys. |

It's a beautiful song and makes me sad for my own dog who is getting older. I have a vague memory of it from my childhood. Great tune!
