This is one very nasty hurricane. I have a step-sister who lives in Fort Myers Florida and I have been trying to call her all day. I can't reach her. God I hope she is safe. This hurricane is a category 4 at 145 mph sustained winds. 10 mph more and it will be a category 5. I live in Bay Saint Louis Mississippi right on the Gulf Coast. So hurricanes are something I am familiar with. If any of you live in Fort Myers or the surrounding areas PLEASE be careful. My prayers are with everyone.

Yes... hey, welcome! Charley went in at Pt Charlotte Harbor... and is a strong Cat 4. I think they have shut off power in the area... to make things safer... and with the water in the area, phone lines whether above (wind) or under ground are affected. PLUS cell phones are on towers, dishes on towers, and then are probably blown down.
Communications will be difficult, so try not to worry because of that. Try and locate a local Ham radio operator. They are the backup for communications, and have portable power and antennas. The local EOCs all have Amateur Radio system set ups, and usually the American Red Cross have agreements also... humanitarian messages of health and safety are welcomed. You can locate one through your the ARRL (american radio relay league) which has a website. If not there, try local police or red cross for a phone number of a local ham good luck. I hope all is well. No, it doesn't look good. I barely made it through Andrew... and we were well prepared. __________________ |

I called a favorite aunt in Sarasota last night. They were largely spared, just a bit of rain. Go figure. Sarasota is not all that far from Fort Myers.

I heard from my sister today. She went to a shelter during the hurricane and is back home now. Thank god she didn't get any damage or flooding at her house. I was so relieved to talk to her. I hope everyone else is doing well. For anyone who lives there or has family/friends in the area my prayers are still with you.

My sister is in Ft. Myers too. She was able to stay in touch with us quite a bit. They had no damage to their apt. or their cars. But she said the sliding glass doors were bowing inward with the wind. Yikes! I think she didn't realize how emotionally and physically draining Friday night was until she got out Saturday and saw all the damage.
I'm glad your sis is okay, too. It's hard to imagine what it must be like. My inlaws also have a place in Ft. Myers, but they are not there right now. They are anxiously awaiting word of the condition of their home. Take care, everyone. Another lesson, I guess to take weather warnings seriously even if nothing usually ever happens. gg __________________ Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts. |

Well I'm glad all is well. I haven't heard from distant friend's relatives in Naples, but I'm sure unless a stray tornado.. they are fine too. I am appalled at some of the ppl's comments on tv about not getting enough notice! Everyone in FL knows that the worst part of the hurricane is the East side, NE quadrant... and the notice of Hurricane Warning all along the west coast was posted a day in advance. Obviously your relatives heeded the advice... glad they are well.

I heard from some friends in Naples that damage was minimal to non-existent there. So hopefully your friend is fine. Now this Earl fellow. I think he needs to be voted off of the planet.
Be safe. gg __________________ Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts. |

well I'll vote on that! If it keeps up the speed it will soon be too far west to come north and get me... even though it's far south...
beginning to wonder if there's any place on earth that is safe.. because every place has something, right? <font color=green> ...slip sliding away... slip sliding away.... __________________ |

I'll gladly take the earthquakes out here in CA any day! You can have your sandstorms, hurricanes, tornados, humid heat, freezing winters, mosquitos and mutant bugs! YECH! Although from time to time, I miss a good old summer thunderstorm!
