A little over a month ago, my band let me go. Three guys who have been together for a long time. And one friend of over 35 years. Friendships are rare, but seldom this cheap. The band was struggling to get something going again after their original drummer melted down with an addiction and dropped out of sight. A little over two years ago, my close friend in the band asked me if I wanted to play with the old set from 20 years ago. I accepted and started to jam with them once a week. Playing was a chance at being part of a love of music again. It was a break from the everyday work and routine. It was a chance at fellowship and social connection after the quarantined years of Covid. It was a break from taking care of an ailing father. But most of all, it was a sense of belonging to something that I enjoyed. I bought some microphones and recording gear and we went to work. Two years later, after we had rehearsed all the material and started to sound like a band, they cut me loose. It was not unusual to have to cancel a practice. The leader of the band cancelled one week. The following week, the bass guitarist cancelled. On the third week, my friend of 35 years cancelled practice. Something had come up. The original drummer had returned. The night before practice on the fourth week, he calls and says they jammed with the old drummer a few times, and it sounded really good. That is it. No apology, no warning, no regret. I really could not process what I heard until the next day. I gave two years of time, money, and effort. They gave me the old go **** yourself. I found these friendships cheap and unworthy of another second of my time. Sometimes, that's how it ends.

That sucks. I played in a band; I know it's not just about music. I hope you'll get into another one
