Has anybody here tried this treatment? I asked my psychiatrist for it and next week I have a consultation meeting with my psychiatrist and the doctor who would perform it. They have already discussed the issue together and determined that I would be a good candidate for it. My psychiatrist started tapering my Effexor, which was at 225mg a day, to 75 mg a day. I have tried many medications from the SSRI and the SNRI class. None of them worked. My psychiatrist said that I could try some drugs from the MAOIs or the tricyclics, but I inquired about ECT. What have your experiences with ECT been like?

Dear Chips,
I had ~18 ECT treatments, helped me tremendously! Changed my Life for the better! Nothing to be afraid of: no pain, or anything negative for me, as matter of fact it's much easier than getting a tooth cavity filled! Really!! PM if you would like to! Best Wishes!

Wow that's fascinating. If you do it, Chips, could you post your experiences here? I'd be interested in hearing how it goes.

I'd be interested in hearing about it also. I have tried everything but MAOI's and ECT. My doc is looking at ECT as the next option. I feel unsure about it but have heard good things about it.

just wondering how your consult went, Chips, and if you are going ahead with the ECT? Hope things are ok for you.

Hmm....I posted in the other ECT question, but I will here too.

I had ECT 2 years ago. I was in a depressed episode and nothing was helping. I had 12 treatments, 8 while I was inpatient and 4 as an outpatient.

In the hospital, I had them in the morning and was fine by dinner. I had a headache and felt a little naseau when I woke up. I took a nap the whole afternoon. It actually does not take that long. It takes longer to provide the anesthia than the ECT treatment.

As an outpatient, I had them MWF in the morning. I was dismissed by noon, but had to be with someone and could not drive myself. I went home and went to sleep. The day is shot.

PS: Some people say they pull their muscles, but they give you a muscle relaxant when they put you to sleep. You are like a rubber band! ECT

I had no memory problems or confusion. Mostly just headaches and naseau. It really helped me when other things did not.

Good luck with your decision.
