Thank you both. This is about a distant relative IRL who seems to behave in cycles of sucking in and then what feels like abusive behaviour. There was a big mess in their early childhood and I became the family scapegoat and blamed for their alcoholism, their not getting on with another relative and feeling rejected, and so on.

Fuzzy, how sad, isn't it, this blame game that seems to harm people, still playing out in our families?
When will people see the premise is wrong. It's unhealthy. It harms people and steals relationships that matter to us, meant to be loving. Hopefully, someone will 'get it' and instruct us on the wide screen about why this is wrong... because we have advanced in so many areas of life, making things easier, attainable, understandable, except with family, notice? I hope you let this roll of your back, Dear Fuzzy ... as their lessons aren't learned yet, that is up to others to receive, so don't waste time dwelling on 'their' stuff. Live your life fully in the present, and go wherever you want, whenever, no matter who is there ... and look 'em in the eye if you have to ... and say 'No, you do not get to go there with me, that is not what I want or need for anyone'. They are bringing on themselves their own problem, see? Don't take it on. Something I learned later in life, but I'm so glad, since it brought me true peace. (((fuzzy)))) im so glad to see you shaking off blame and fault that never belonged to you... healing can happen so much more quickly if we just release the past misunderstandings, releasing others from blame, saving energy by not playing the fault game... you see now what happened then and now you can choose to avoid unhealthy responses to it.. claim your joy hon!

Work on a good line/"speech" and bite back if necessary this time :-) They can't bite you if you're wearing leather leggings and have a sword to lop off their head with if they dare to try. Be like a kid, "You're not my mother!" :-) only reverse it, "I'm not ______", whoever or whatever they had trouble with in their past.
