Hello All:

I was driving along the other day and heard the summary of a research study in a health Public Service Announcement from a Medical Center at University of Florida, Gainesville.

The gist of it was that People who received Cognitive Behavior Therapy (I think it was group therapy, but can't remember) by phone without meds showed greater improvement than people taking meds alone, or those without therapy or meds.

I suspect that participating in the Forums serves a similar function to the phone therapy, helping us recover faster.

Interesting! Do you happen to recall the length of the study? Previous studies have shown that for a few disorders there is no difference between meds OR psychotherapy after 6 months... but then you can read that many different ways too!

Yes this is another "weird" type of group therapy...

Hi Wants,

I agree with this view. I haven't done too well with counselling because I get caught up with the counsellor as a person and I have this idea that they are patronising me or prying into my privacy ("they are well and I am ill" type thinking).

This forum has served an invaluable function for me:

1. I was able to find my level, get a reflection of where I stand in the scheme of things. That is worth it's weight in gold for a start.

2. The anonymity allowed me to express the poison (share some family history) without feeling that I am laying myself out on the operating table.

3. Being in a peer group helps me to avoid feeling 'special' in a bad way. I am just one of the bunch here at Psych Central.

Psych Central - a lifesaver.

Cheers, Myzen. Phone Therapy Works
