What can I expect? I am going for my first disability hearing and am not sure what I should have with me and what I should do? Can I bring anyone who can support my illness? Any help would be appreciated!

take your attorney and any witnesses you may have. they will ask alot of questions. there will be like a judge there as adjudicator.

Not everyone has an attorney but is recommended. I know they are allowed in but I don't know that anyone else is, as I know they said mine was a closed hearing otherwise. A friend waited outside the chamber for me.
Most of the questions were to clarify about previous employment, my inability to work-why couldn't I, how specifically the illness impaired my abilities ( a lot of emphasis on this- how daily activities were impaired, let alone work), current medications and any side-effects. I did have an attorney who answered many of these things for me, and had copies of the records which were filed w/ SS and copies of the doctor's statements, for both of us to refer to. I get nervous and don't remember things under these conditions even about myself. Panic sets in. It helped to have notes just in case, about symptoms, meds and side-effects (when NOT treated by meds), and employment history. I was told to just answer to the point, be as brief as possible and if I did not understand the question completely, ask for clarification. I noticed the attorney even though I was improving on meds, pointed out when asked, with the nature of the illness I have, there is no guarantee of maintaining this level or a better level continuously. It was so true. I wish you much luck and will be hoping for the best! |

Skully, as i understand it, for the First Hearing, you don't need to be accompanied by a Lawyer, but you can have someone there to support you,, cognitively and emotionally.. they shouldn't be the ones talking for you tho, as it is YOU who is being evaluated,, go ahead and be as nervous as you want,, you have to let them see you in your disabled condition !! i agree with most of what Fresia says, too . best wishes~!
