I recently decided that I was ready to work part-time, and called a local Workforce Center for help.

With my "ticket to work" card, I spoke with one of the counselors at length. Their goal is get the disabled people back to work, and I presume off SSI. I think that I can work part-time, once I discover what I am still able to do. But I am terrified that I'm going to struggle in whatever work I do find myself in. And that SSI will kick me out, and I'll have to find a place to live, health insurance, and so on.

Am I being completely paranoid, or are these reasonable fears?? I am afraid of losing everything I've finally managed to get because I think that I can work some kind of job maybe 20 hours per week. Our current economy certainly sucks, and Lord knows they're anxious to make citizens less dependent upon government assistance.

Please write back ~ thank you for reading!

not sure how it is now but when I first went on disability the ticket to work was to see if you could and I think was like 9 months but not sure. I would call the person you spoke with about it and ask questions. I would hate to see you or anyone have to go back thru the process all over again.

the rules are very different for SSI and SSDI (the earned kind),, you need to be sure if you have both, or either , which one, etc. you say SSI, so i will address that,,,, if you work over 20 hrs a week , they will definately send you for a review... but you can work less than that for a long long time,, for every $2 you earn, they take back $1 of SSI,, (that's gross, before taxes )... But, if you are a client of Vocational Rehabilitation, you are covered for 3 yrs EVEN if you recover completely, in case you relapse,, if you want more ,, PM me,, Gus

on SSI when you work they reduce your check amount by what you make working. that is why ssi is a good thing. you can try to work but it doesn't mean you'll lose your ssi. that's the whole point of it. if it doesn't work out you will return to your full check amount from ssi. in the meantime while working you keep your med. insurance, etc. so not to worry. the good thing is you're willing to try to work. i did the same thing, worked 20 hours, and found i could manage but in the meantime i had all the benefits as if i wasn't working. good luck and hope this reassures you.
