I am hard of hearing due to an autoimmune thing. I do know some sign. I can finger spell like a pro (according to my deaf friends). I plan on going back to school for ASL.

Welcome to PC I am hard of hearing, and have a nasty case of tinnitus. My wife and I have been learning ASL also. Seems inevitable considering that my condition is progressive.

I am losing my hearing due to progressive nerve damage. It runs in my family. I have hearing aids.

Yes! I have tinnitus! It sure does suck. I have to sleep with a fan on. And I need captions on the TV.

Yeah we need captions too. I can still watch stuff without them on my own computer but it has to be basically right in front of my face. We can only see movies that have closed captioning devices in the theatres. My hearing aids don't work all that well. I find it's just challenging existing in this world with a sensory impairment. I've been living with it most of my life and I'm still not used to it.

What about cartoons and CGI characters? OMG! Those are a pain! I had a hard time with the new Star Wars movie when I saw it in the theater because I didn't use a caption thing. When my fiance and I watched it on DVD, we had captions and I understood the movie better.

That's happened to me before. We don't go to a movie anymore if it doesn't have CC, no matter how bad one or both of us wants to see it. But that happens all the time: I watch movies now with captions or on my computer where I can hear it and all of a sudden it's like a completely different movie haha.

I've been profoundly hearing impaired since I was 3... Measles just before they had the vaccine available. Have worn the most powerful hearing aid they make since then and learned ASL when I was 23. Back in the day they didn't want kids to learn ASL. In the hearing world I depend on lip reading and body language. Animated characters are terrible, can't lip read them. When they came out with captioned tv in the 80's it was a godsend, but theatres are still terrible about captions. I wait for the DVDs then rent them from redbox. I don't fit into the hearing world or the deaf world but as baby boomers get older I find that it get easier to find people to fit in with.

The only time it *really* bothers me to not have CC at theatres is at film festivals, because that's where all the truly great films are. I don't care so much about hollywood blockbusters, but I live in a city where there are tons of great festivals and very few captioned films.

Nammu: loved your comment about the boomers.

Yes! Isn't that funny that way? That's how I felt when I watched that new Star Wars film at home instead of at the theater.
