Hi new here but thought I would post to this. I have been in therapy for DID for 4 -5 years now. It is true that there is no death or going away with integration. At first I was scared and thought I had to go through all kinds of painful stuff and force the integration. My therapist and I did years of reseach and treatment plans working on my DID. (my info can be found at NAMI website where I have a thread titled DID.). Part of my treatment plan included contacting professionals in the field of DID and drawing up a treatment plan and so on. It is true that no alters (otherwise known as personalities, parts, memory pieces, and fragments) do not go away, can not be killed or forces away. There is no pain involved in the integration process, there is no death screams and so on. The brain naturally stores separately everything a person experiences according to the five senses and emotions. that information is then forever stored in the long term or short term memory usually in the conscious level. and then when thinking about the situation those memory pieces automatically are arranded together so that our thoughts are of one memory with complete content. but when an abuse factor is added the information is stored separately like normal only these memory pieces are stored in the unconscious level because the person has created their own mental escape (dissociating which is daydreaming themselves out of the situation, imagining that they are safe and the abuse is not happening to them) since there is no physical escape. because of this the memories are now stored in the unconscious level. the only way the person remembers these memories is if they get triggered and they have the ability of co-consciousness (remaining mentally aware while the body is acting out these memories). Once the person has the ability of co-consciousness they can remember what happened to them and the trigger and then put things in place to help themselves so that that trigger no longer scares them into running to their mental safe place. even though they now remember the situation as a whole the memories are still stored separate and will remain that way forever because that is how the brain stores any memories. All that has happened is that when the person is faced with a trigger they are no longer afraid so they no longer mentally run to their mental safe place and memories are once again stored in the conscious level

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
