in our daily phone call with counselor today,we were discussing core and how she has made even the tiniest of progress when out of nowhere counselor dropped a bombshell on us-she said she isnt exactly sure at this point in time but she thinks core may not be the core at all!!! we cant even imagine how this could be so since she is who we have always, always known to be core. has anyone else here had any experience with this because it has left us a bit dazed

Yeah we have had this happen. sometimes the one that is out the most is the core but other times it may be another alter. the one that is the body name may be inside because it may not be safe to come out or she may not beable to for what ever reason. We have a core who is a baby. She sleep all the time. we have parts that are out most the time handling daily stuff.

I'm sorry that was upsetting to you TD. I don't understand my "core" at all...If it is supposed to be the one always present, do I even have one? Is the core supposed to have always been? The first one?
Hugs to you if you want them. |

Calista, it all depends on what model of dissociation one adheres to. The latest research on dissociative identity disorder (and what the new DSM V is being based on) doesn't ascribe to the theory of there being a 'core' at all. If you want to read more research 'structural dissociation'. The whole thing about a 'core' personality that is protected by other personalities is an idea that was borne out of the 80' and 90's and hasn't been scientifically validated at all. Structural dissociation explains the processes much more comprehensively.
