ive been told i use dissociation as a coping device, but im not sure how? I dont have DID. Can the doctor be describing my habit of hiding my emotions and the way i cope through withdrawal? Refusing to particapate in a 'normal' fashion when i feel threatened?

rapidcycla,
You don't have to be diagnosed with DID to use dissociation as a coping mechanism. Everyone dissociates in one way or another, it just varies to what degree it happens. My counselor told me to think of it as a spectrum. On one end is everyday dissociation like daydreaming or driving and not remembering the trip after arriving at your destination and on the other is DID. He said that many people use this to cope with things they cannot handle. Perhaps asking the doctor for clarification might help you. Sending positive thoughts your way, Cris from the hotel |
