I have a new friend that I'm very tempted to tell them about DID & where I am on the spectrum. Problem is I have no idea how to explain it correctly & in a general way that they could understand. Something generic? not very technical.
Question: Can anyone recommend an article that basically explains what did is? Just in lay terms so there's less for me to explain to them. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you

what that means is now everything you find on the internet, in books, magazines and such on the disorder is now outdated, invalidated. my suggestion is you know you, you know how dissociation and DID affects you, and you seem to know this friend very well (otherwise you probably would not be considering disclosing your mental disorder to them) Because of all this you are the "expert" on how much, what about your problem you should disclose and how to go about doing so... example an article on linewill include the word ---possession--- because of the new DSM 5 guidelines my wife may understand I dont mean ghosts and spirits if I use that term so I know I can use that term with her but I know my next door neighbor uses that term in reference to ghosts goblins and the like would take that term to mean something it doesnt so I used the term ...switched into an alter... when discussing it with a neighbor friend of mine. only you know this friend well enough to come up with the generic, non technical terms for how DID and dissociation affects you. so my suggestion is dont rely on other peoples words or outdated materials, sit down and write out what DID is to you, how it affects you and what you would like this friend to know about you. |

I think your best bet would be to Google it and find an article that he would be able to understand. There must be a world of information on DID out there. You just have to find one that is in layman's terms. Good Luck!

What helped me explain to my husband was to talk about "structural dissociation". Here's a few links (I found the illustration to be most helpful when showing what it means):
http://www.complex-trauma.eu/wp-cont...05/sd-ptsd.jpg Summary Structural Dissociation | Complex Trauma Structural Dissociation of the Personality - Dissociative Identity Disorder, Dissociation and Trauma Disorders One of those articles is rather in-depth but it helped me to understand more about it so I could translate it into layman terms. |
