I only watched the first couple episodes but I didnt think it very good. it was supposed to be a fictional (not based in truth or on any ones actual life) comedy using the mental disorder DID. they were more or less attempting to make fun of the mental disorder. it ran for three seasons then got cancelled here in America. one of the actors did an interview shortly after it had been cancelled saying, millions of people started watching it expecting it to be a true representative of DID but as people found out it wasnt going to be a true representation of the disorder or any ones life the ratings slacked off. eventually they had to "integrate tara and her alters" and end the show.

here in the USA the reruns of the show can be watched on showtime, youtube, netflix and other online and cable networks. its also out on DVD and can be bought at amazon, walmrt, target basically anywhere DVD's are sold.

My spouse started watching it and she swears that Sybil and her are the real deal. I'm not going to argue with her, never mind the spectrum.

Guaranteed there is the most extremes of extremes and I feel for them because it had to hurt. For that I'm sorry. :'(

I have all three seasons and it's actually pretty good. It's obviously exaggerated but I personally liked it.

The united states of Tara makes for good fiction.

It should not be used as some kind of teaching aid in regards to DID.
Thanks for this!

I liked it. I loooved it bc of the husband. He would do anything for her. Also her sister is really funny. At least it didn't depict her as a killer. Maybe I've watched too much tv in my day but I'm sick of cheesey made for tv movies where the killer has DID. The movie Sybil irks me. The mother in it creeps me out. But I do like Sally Field. P

(For Sybil, read the book. It's much better and makes a ton of sense (I think).

I have seen all three seasons of United States Of Tara I do think it is exaggerated because most people have not met someone with DID. Or they have and don't realise it. Many times in real life alters are good at "acting" like the host. What good would they be if random general public could recognise a switch of personality? So in real life switching is more subtle.

Many TV programs that deal with illness either psych or hysically often sensationalize it. The goal of the show is entertainment not education which is something to keep in mind IMO

I liked wtching it. But it does get pretty "heavy" so you have to stay away if having a tough day or week.

For entertainments I enjoyed it.

Im a bit confused in this link the therapist isnt discussing the movie or her thoughts on the movie itself. in fact the only mention of the movie is stating the movie uses the term transitioning instead of the term switching. in this link the discussion is on the topic of time loss and how according to this therapist most people with DID do not notice when they have lost time. I dont see any other references to the movie other than the fact they use the word transitioning instead of the word switching. so im wondering if you meant to post a different link?

I also think that they overdo it some to make it more clear to audience members; most of us (?) don't run home and change clothes every time we switch- but tv can't show what is in the mind easily, so they have to make it more obvious; that is one way to do it. I was just thinking about this the other day. But yeah, it is still entertainment for the masses, if even a little instructional for the population. Maybe makes it less "scary" for them (?).
