So does anyone else ever have the experience of looking in the mirror and not recognizing themselves. I hate it when a stranger stares back at me. (sorry if I sound nuts) but it happenned again this weekend and I'm feeling especially vulnerable so I guess I let it bother me more than normal.

Does anyone have any info about this weird phenomenon? I get something similar. It's kind of like I KNOW its me but the image doesn't look like me or the way its supposed to or something. It weirds me out too. I don't like it. Any guesses that it means something or only happens when one is stressed? Or maybe its a sign of some sort of change happening or about to happen?

I can relate. It's called Depersonalization.

Depersonalization is the sense of being detached from, or “not in” one’s body. This is what is often referred to as an “out-of-body” experience. However, some people report rather profound alienation from their bodies, a sense that they do not recognize themselves in the mirror, recognize their face, or simply feel not “connected” to their bodies in ways which are challenging to articulate (Frey, 2001; Guralnik, Schmeidler, & Simeon, 2000; Maldonado et al., 2002; Simeon et al., 2001; Spiegel & Cardeña; Steinberg, 1995).

For me... it is an alter that stares back at me in the mirror.. I have come to recoginze my different looks...

But then my clothes preferences are very different.. at different times...

The jewlery I wear is also very different... at times...

But that is just me...

don't look in the mirrors, it is very scary, break all the mirrors or put scarves over them, or just NEVER look
