I have read your other posts on this same problem....that you are afraid doing emdr with your therapist will bring up repressed memories....if you have any repressed memories yes it will thats what emdr is for.. learning about what is going on with you, what is causing you to have your anxiety and so on and then working with those memories so that you dont have this problem again with that same memory.

when I did a short version of emdr it did bring up memories that I had forgotten (your word repressed) some were happy memories some were not so happy memories.

when I did it, the first session was not actually doing the emdr. it was my therapist and I talking about how to do it, what was going to happen, what my side of it was, what their side of it was, what to expect, a code word in case I needed to stop and if I had any problems, or questions we hadnt talked about yet..

my suggestion is to talk with your treatment provider. they will be able to answer all your questions as they are directly related to your own problems and you and them doing it.

one thing you need to understand here. there are thousands of people here at psych central. some people have had good results with their treatment plans and others havent. the best thing to do is not to compare what you may end up going through, why because you will have a completely different experience with it then I did or anyone else did, you have a different treatment provider then I had, your treatment provider may do it slightly different or a heck of a lot different than mine did, the things you talk about and remember will be related to you and your problems not mine and my problems....

just take it one step at a time and talk with your treatment provider about all the things that you fear will happen and they can help you and answer your questions.

I haven't yet but my plans to do EMDR with me later on. I wanted to do it earlier but she said we have to get a lot of stability first because EMDR can trigger a lot of dissociation so it has to be done very very carefully. That's why all EMDR practitioners are supposed to screen for dissociation before beginning EMDR, there are special techniques and protocols to follow when using it with people with dissociation to protect against dissociative switching and flooding during processing.
Are you thinking of doing it or have you done it already?

She did tapping on my knees instead of eye movement. She gave me a choice. She did screen me for dissocation and she tapped on my knees while i thought of a safe place. Said i had to dothis so in future sessions if i dissociate i can bring myself back.
Thanks for this!

I hope I am remembering this correctly... my memory is like a piece of swiss cheese... but I think I tried the tapping thing once with a t after some finger buzzer thing set off my sensory issues. If that finger buzzer thing and the tapping she had me do were some modified version of emdr, then no, it did not bring back any repressed memories for me. I think though the point of it for me was to process already known memories with my adult v/s child brain. I also seem to recall that it did absolutely nothing for me so we stopped. But again, that is all hazy to me at best, so yeah... hopefully I am recalling correctly.
