I used to have dissociative episodes quite frequently as a result of post traumatic stress. When I received considerable treatment for my ptsd the episodes mostly stopped.

Over the past few months I’ve noticed it happening again. Getting worse. It started with small lapses. Nothing too out of the ordinary. But I started losing pretty decent chunks of time. Like feeling as though I’m walking through a dream and realizing that several hours have passed without recalling what happened. I think possibly a lot of social isolation is the cause.

I’m a little frightened of this happening when I go back to work in a week. I drive for my job and I if I dissociate while driving I may find myself 30 minutes or more beyond where I was supposed to be.

I also have been experiencing very strange dreams. Much stranger than usual and it seems as though I thrash around when I sleep because I wake up feeling sore and I have bruises from where I accidentally hit something while asleep.

I don’t know how worried I should be about this.

Dear eliaris,

That sounds very distressing. If it was happening to me, I think I would consult with a physician. Unfortunately I am not a physician or medical professional myself. The situation you describe sounds scary and I am so sorry that after sleeping you wake up feeling sore and have bruises. Yikes.

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen

I would be getting myself checked out as soon as I could. I’m really sorry this is happening to you, do you get to socialise at all as part of your job; would it help to alleviate your symptoms to any degree, if social isolation is the cause or a contributing factor? I hope it’s ok to ask, I don’t actually know much about PTSD so I apologise in advance if I cause any offence

My job does include interacting with people but it doesn’t feel like real interactions. It feels like I’m reciting a script. And I’ve been staying home because of Covid and I’ve been sick the past few days so it’s been a bit of a blur. I used to have quite a few friends but I had to leave college to do an inpatient for a few months in 2019. Most of my friends have moved away and graduated and 2020 wasn’t the best year to be back in independent life.

Thank you for responding. I have my appointment next week. I’m hoping that he will help tell me what to do. Maybe I’ll have to get on another medication.
