I'm not sure if I have DID...Up until now, I've only had depersonalization...However, the other day someone came up to me, greeted me warmly, and called me "Jennifer"--which is not my name. The thing is, I have a vague--really, really vague, so vague that it may just be my imagination--memory of seeing her somewhere before, but I'm not sure where... When I told her that she had gotten the wrong person, she looked at me skeptically and asked "Do you have a twin?" She mentioned meeting me in a chemistry class that I had taken before, but I don't remember talking with her (if I really did meet her). The thing is, she said the name Jennifer so confidently, so I'm not sure if it's just her remembering my name wrong... I'm really confused now...

I can see why that would be confusing. I guess my question for you would be - has this happened many times to you before? As a one off incident I would not think it would be anything significant. As a DIDer, for me, this kind of thing happened many, many times throughout childhood and adulthood. It was kind of 'usual' for us, though always disturbing and a source of great anxiety as we tried to fudge our way through each interaction.
I guess my line of thinking here is that if you had DID, you would likely have had this kind of thing happen to you throughout your life. I sure do know how disturbing it is tho. |

i think luce's question is a good one. i wouldn't let a one-off interaction like that bother you, but if it became a pattern it might be worth wondering about.

It depends on how well you remember people. A lot of the time ppl come up to me expecting me to know them and I have either absolutely no idea who they are and would have sworn I'd never met them before, or I vaguely recognise them or think I might know them but still have no idea who they are. I had a woman talk to me in the supermarket a couple of weeks ago expecting me to know Sheila and somebody else and I had no idea who they might be (and I didn't actually know who she was, either, lol) but she did know me anyway, because she knew I had chosen university after my A-levels. Most people I talk to expect me to know them when I don't know them, , I just get used to it.
For your encounter, maybe you did know her but never took much notice of her. And maybe she thought your name was Jennifer when it isn't. Sometimes people mis-remember names or think ppl are called something when they aren't. I've been called Emma and Jenny and neither is my name. Sometimes people just mis-remember. So for your Chemistry classmate, she may either have actually been in your class and thought your name was Jennifer, or not been in your class and thought you were...

Saphel - it could be yes or no. I am DID, but not in that way because i keep myselves to my self... That said, I did have an encounter like that where I guy swore he knew me - even though I'd never been in that shop. He asked if I had a twin. Come to think on it, there have been others (like maybe 3) who had asked me that over the years. But not after say... age 22. I don't know. Not much help, I guess.

"Sometimes people mis-remember names or think ppl are called something when they aren't"
this reminds me... LOL there was a guy in my choir class who kept trying to call me Mari. I had no idea and never gave him a look. Finally he asked me out to prom and found out my name. Ironically, Mari was a gal in HIS year- both a year above me - and also in our choir. He wondered why I'd never talk to him. ROFL
