It could be a number of things; but overall, the most important thing to do is see a physician and counselor. The physician can rule out medical causes of not being able to eat solid foods, while the counselor can seek out psychological/emotional reasons for not being able to eat, as well as not being able to eat in front of others. Please see both, even if you don't think that you have body image issues, or emotional issues (some anorexics/bulimics become disordered purely from a sense built up self-hatred and feelings of not be deserving of basic things, as a form of self-punishment). Following from this, it could be an issue of control, which uses food/body as an outlet (see The Secret Language of Eating Disorders).
Just a few other things that could be causing your symptoms: physical ailments/diseases (another members ED was caused this way); or Social Phobia/Anxiety Disorder (causes inability to eat in front of others). An any case, it is CRUCIAL that you seek medical/psych help, as your current habits will quickly deteriorate your health. Best Wishes, Jessie |

I totally agree with Jessie. Whether or not it's an official disorder isn't as important as realizing that it's a big problem for you and that you should get some help for it.

The main issue with eating disorders of all kinds is "body image" problems
The not being able to eat in front of people in public is definitely a psychological problem.....not an eating disorder as such. The other things that you discribe are just poor eating habits & I too find it necessary to have fluids along with my food.....not a disorder. I had problems not eating (for the 2nd time in my life) at the beginning of this year due to the stress I was going through with the trauma around the ID theft the home care RN pulled on my Mother when she was dying of cancer. It was considered anorexia because of the massive weight loss & the fact I had lost over 12 lbs in a month. It was the disorder but without the body image which was a clue that there was another cause for the problem that needed to be addressed. I was medically treated for the weight loss, anemia, & mal nutrition & my GP did all the tests in the book to determine if it was something physically wrong with me (nothing showed up). I was actually put into treatment for anorexia the first time I had massive weight loss. It was initiated by a reaction to the antidepressants I was on & couldn't eat food without feeling sick. I had 1 month at a treatment center with no help at all. The problems you listed need to be addressed by you & need to be solved because they are not physically healthy....but as for being an Eating disorder...you need to look at what you are thinking about your body image. If you do a search on Anorexia on the internet, you will find thousands of sites to provide you information that you can read & analize if you fit the explaination. I would start there & look truthfully at your thinking to help you determine what might be going on with you. If it continues on for a while....then you will need to get a medical Dr involved to help you get physically stable. Don't just let it slide...do your research.....it will help you realize what might be going on with your eating. Debbie
