How do you deal when triggered by "diet talk"? I live on a woman's floor in a college dorm... I am surrounded by the dreaded diet talk! "Did you know that a muffin has X calories in it?!" "I really need to cut out carbs!" "I'm hungry but I'm telling myself I'm not hungry so I'll lose some weight." Really? And I'm the one with the eating disorder? Every time I look someone is scanning the bar-code on their food item to record the calories. It just drives me nuts... Although, I can pretty much look at anything and tell you how many calories are in it. I don't need a computer to figure it out for me. But that's what happens when you've been counting calories as long as I have. <sigh>

It is really annoying because I know, I know it's just talk for them. Diets are "in fashion." But boy is it triggering. Like I need to be reminded not only of how many calories are in my food, but that everyone else will know how much I'm eating, too? That kind of freaks me out!

Trust me, I know plenty about dieting. Like I need more reasons to obsess about food than I already do. Now I can't get it out of my head.

Yes, the others are obsessed with food too, just in other, less obvious, more socially accepted unhealthy ways. I'd get a bit "evil" with them (and myself)?

"Do you know that muffin has X calories in it?!"

"And you find this an interesting topic of conversation, why? Do you know that you are courting an eating disorder and that they're no fun?"

Are there specific people who you are close to who do this, in your dorm room, or is it mostly other places on campus? I was lucky enough to have a really supportive hall, and I felt ashamed and embarassed admitting a lot of my struggles to them, it was something I needed to help keep me on track and they were an essential part of my support group while I was away from family and friends. Most people will be surprisingly considerate and accomodating if you tell them that certain actions are really triggering for you.
