I'm in a new relationship with a great guy but he has no knowledge of eating disorders. He is so patient with me but sometimes says things that he has no idea sends me right over the edge and completely triggers me ESP if I choose to try and eat something . One day he was Like omg ur eating!! Well that meal went directly to the trash after I totally flipped on him and said don't u date ever say that to me again! Ever!! He couldn't get it. Then he started weighing himself like 8 or more times a day on my scale and again I flipped! And told him he was triggering me! He couldn't get it. He had to leave for a several month long contract to build and I gave him some books which he's begun reading to better understand me and the disease. I can't believe he's actually doing it! No other guy has ever done that for me. But I'm going through a terrible time and he wants to be there and know what to do and not to do and how to support me. I feel really lucky for the first time in a long time that someone cares that much. I just hope he doesn't leave after he sees all the dirty details!

Starting a new relationship can be extremely difficult at the best of times, let alone when mental illness is present. But it seems like he really is trying. Any guy who is worthy will be supportive even knowing the dirty details.

As hard as it can be try to remember that this is a major learning curve for him too. It will take him time to work out your triggers and what to say/do when you are struggling. But it seems that he really is a good guy so should get there.

Good luck with it all!
