I saw a facebook friend's posting on my news feed. It reads something along the lines of "I have an eating disorder. I'm gonna be eating dis order of fries and eating dis order of chicken wings." As a recovered woman, this just really really bugs me! I get it's supposed to be a joke, but I feel that it really downplays the severity and seriousness of the millions of people who struggle with or have struggled with an eating disorder and those in their lives that are also affected. I made a comment, but she hasn't said anything yet. In fact, one of her friends commented afterwards about how hilarious it was. Am I being too sensitive? I understand that people don't "get" eating disorders without personal experience in one way or another, but joking about it like this really bothers me. I made my comment and tried to move on with my evening, but I'm just stuck thinking about it. I've been solidly recovered for several years, so it's not that I'm still too raw from the past. Any advice on how to deal with this?

Yes, I think there is no need to take this personally. It wasn't directed at you. This person may not know you had an eating disorder. People are insensitive and use words loosely. It was just a pun. I find it amusing, but it would be bad taste to post it say in a group of people with the disorder.
Facebook is a trashy company and the system tends to plaster things all over the place where they are unwanted. Your situation is a case in point. I had to get off there because my BPD relative would rant her questionable reactions all over the place all the time. It was painful to see her assassinating her future employment potential when an employer googles that stuff. |

You can always unsubscribe. Try to put it behind you, people make jokes about anything.

I probably would have felt the same way as you did...but that's just me! I would be curious to hear your "friend"s response...but yes...I like the advice of not following her posts anymore, or even unsubscribing. You can always go back if you feel like you want to...I use an alias on FB myself, that way I reach out to who I want...no one can "find" me...(well that's my belief anyway, I am sure I could be traced if someone was that desperate!)
