Last week my doctor put me on an antibiotic for a mild infection. I had no issues while I was on it, but now that I've finished the medication, I suddenly have gained a lot of weight, even though I've been restricting very heavily.

I'm honestly feeling suicidal and too depressed to function because of this. I've done some online research, and it's common to gain weight after taking antibiotics because they mess with your stomach chemistry. I'm scared to death that the extra weight will never come off, and I'll just keep gaining and gaining, and I'm too stressed out to eat at all.

Right now I just want to curl up in a ball and cry all day but I have to go to work and pretend everything is normal. I just can't do this. I'm too fat. Why did this have to happen?!!

I am sorry you are so distressed by the weight gain from the antibiotics. Yogurt helps restore the naturally enzymes and good bacteria in your belly.

Here are some articles that might be of interest.

I was going to offer the same suggestion that Candc offered......yogurt is the best thing to eat after taking antibiotics.....also, there are OTC tablets that are probiotics that you can also take.....I got some at CVS pharmacy......they also help in getting any constipation from happening also....sort of get the body working again the way it's supposed to & that is better than taking laxitives or stool softeners because it helps your body function naturally again. Yes, antibiotics really can mess up the system. That's why I don't take them unless I don't have a choice...but usually I try to allow my own body to fight off infections....only if it's not working do I resort to antibiotics.

When I was a kid, I was constantly sick & the antibiotics then caused my teeth to form without enamel so I had all my teeth breaking off & finally had oral surgery to remove all my teeth just this year.....totally a miserable experience.
