I feel like food is repulsive. I eat because I know I have to, I eat because I will feel physically unwell if I don't eat. But it's extremely difficult for me to view food as anything but repulsive. It reminds me of (sorry) vomit or something. Does anyone else here have such a problem? Is it an eating disorder - or perhaps a symptom of depression?

I'm sorry I don't have the answer to this. But I noticed you had yet to receive a reply. So I thought I would write one. Hopefully other members will yet have more incisive insights to offer.

I suppose what you are experiencing could be a symptom of depression. I would also suppose it could suggest some sort of eating disorder; or perhaps it might be something that could lead to an eating disorder?

In my case, I used to like to eat (as well as cook.) But at this point in my life I just really don't much care. I eat because I have to. But I don't really care what it is as long as it's easy. I don't like sloppy food. Back when I used to go to restaurants, I tried to avoid anything on the menu that sounded as though it would be messy, such as some of the sandwiches restaurants serve up that have everything but the kitchen sink in them.

Thank you, Skeezyks. I deeply appreciate your input. I started taking Wellbutrin recently; I suspect it's causing my appetite to decrease (which is a good thing, given the way many psych meds cause that deranged increase in appetite). It's the "messy" foods I can't stomach, either...stuff all mixed up with stuff. Yuck

My first actual experience with anorexia (lost weight into very dangerous low) actually was triggered by Prozac. It totally took my appetite away (stress & then weight loss becoming addictive added to it) My pdoc changed my med to wellbutrin after I got out of the ED treatment center but that med like Prozac also kept me from getting hungry & I lost more. Spent several years in & out of the medical hospital having to have IV nutrition through a central line (also not a healthy thing to go through as often as I did)

There were lots of things that caused my extreme weight loss & body image was the least of them. Recovered only when I left the stressful marriage that was the main reason for it. There are so many different things that cause us to find food disgusting. It feels amazing when life finally finds its balance. My major depression & major anxiety have vanished. It is interesting though now when something stressful hits in my life I recognize the anxiety feeling immediately & can finally correlate feeling to cause which I never could do before when I was overloaded on causes
