1) Expressing yourself
a. Ways to express yourself
· Think about what you say and how you say it, to yourself and others. Increase your use of the pronoun “I,” and follow it up with active verbs such as feel, think, want, wish, am! Say “do” instead of “don’t.”
· Stop thinking of yourself as “Bulimic,” or “Anorexic.” You’re “recovering from bulimia,” or “recovering from anorexia.”
· Use positive self-talk. The mind can create problems or solutions depending on what you practice. Repeat phrases like, “I love myself,” and “I am great!”
· Instead of swallowing your emotions, let them out. Try to determine what your Eating Disorder is says and express those feeling with words. Give it a voice.
· If you are angry, hit or kick a punching bag. Scream out loud.
· Draw, paint, dance, sing!
· If you need to comfort someone and are not sure how to do it, rehearse with a sympathetic friend or in front of a mirror. Maybe write out what you’d like to say. Consider role-playing the conversation.
· Abandon your fears about talking to people. Be honest. Express your opinion!
· Seek out uplifting friends and support each other. Let family and friends get to know the real you.
Thanks for this!
