Has anyone ever tried prescription antidepressants or other medication to help with bulimia recovery? If so, what has your experience been like? Did you go to a specialist or a gp? How about your hormonal levels -- did you have them checked and what kind of doctor did you go to.

I've had loads of therapy and nutritional consultation and go to OA but still suffer from occasional binges --- I can't help but wonder if a visit to a doctor might help. Everything I read classifies bulimia as a psychological issue, but I can't believe that is totally true.

Hi Tina ,

we sound like we have done the same therapy OA route. I was anti meds and still am. I finally asked for some medication after ten years into recovery and was prescribed

Prozac . Google Bulimia and Prozac.

I just read about Topomax / It doesn't sound all that great.

I was on 60 mg for a good two or three years . Took away my sex drive .

Things didn't seem to effect me emotionally as much .

Was a bit tired at first . I found my binging was anger driven . I did fine except for Thursdays when I'd work for a woman who just treated me in a suttley undermining way and was super controling. I could not stand up for myself so I would find myself eating after work. stoped working for her after 18 years . Best thing I ever did.

So its not a cure all . I think Prozacs pretty safe to try.

Patricia
Thanks for this!

I agree with Patricia.....

One of my pdocs in the hospital told me that Prozac was really good for bulimia, but I won't take it because I had a bad reaction to it in HS.

Might be worth a try.......
Best of luck to you.

I am taking Prozac. I used to be bulimic I think, I was throwing up like 2 times a day. I don't have bulimia anymore. I think the Prozac definitely helped.

I'm not Bulimic, I was anorexic, but now recovered. I could now stand to lose about 15 pounds. Anyway, I've been taking Topamax which helped me to lose alot of weight years ago. I recently told my pdoc that I was binge eating and she increased my dose. She said it would help stop the binge eating and control my appetite a little. I think it's helping already.
It is precribed for Bulimia. (I take it for Bipolar) Also, I heard Prozac is good for that.

This was a very helpful post me. I guess I have been holding out hope that there was still some cure-all when the reality is that I cannot afford to use food to deal with feelings -- especially anger.

Sex drive is low enough as it is, so for now I think I'll let go of the Prozac fantasy.
