Hi all, last year I gained a lot of weight fairly quickly and I'm not sure what its from. I gave up fast food and soda, I've been eating organic when I can and generally other healthy food (lots of fun smoothies!). I don't drink almost at all, just when a birthday or other fun occasion comes up, so maybe a couple drinks a month. I work out almost daily, mostly at home doing yoga, cardio, and other toning exercises. I'm a student so I don't have a whole lot of time for the gym but I usually get a 20 minute work out every day. I've been doing this for months and I haven't lost anything. If anything, I've gained 5 pounds just over the last couple of weeks and I'm sick of it!!

I'm on Vyvanse, seroquel, abilify, cogentin, and cymbalta. I also have the Mirena which I've heard can cause weight gain but a few doctors have assured me that since it contains no estrogen, the weight gain can't be from that. Any advice? I know a few of these medications can cause weight gain but I wanted to get some more personal group insight. Thanks for any and all feedback!

seroquel is also know for large weight gain though it depends on the person. Sadly, it seems to be the side effect.....stable mental but deal with weight gain.....or sometimes there is the opposite problem I had was massive weight loss.

Are they SURE that all those meds you are on are necessary?

You said months, how much time is that? Maybe you need to be patient and I know you don't have much time but try to add more minutes to your daily workout. And maybe it will also help you to do something more intense. for example, if you do aerobics, find a more intense routine.

Swimming or running are great options.

Unfortunately. I just switched pdocs and she changed some of them up but left the rest as is. I know its a lot of pills, and I hate them, but I'm pretty stable except the anxiety and depression I get over this weight gain and having to buy new clothes all the time because I outgrow everything so quickly.

I wanna say about 8 or 9 months now since I started all this. I was seeing a slight improvement but then the holidays happened and all of that went away.

Since you just went to a new pdoc.....she would be the best one to talk to about what alternate possibilities there might be that wouldn't cause you the weight gain.....with weight gain comes other problems that aren't as simple as just a few pounds. Seroquel raises blood sugar so if you have a history of diabetes in your family or the tendency toward it yourself....it's something you need to watch especially with the weight gain which can also lead to type 2 diabetes. I know it's stressful when you feel like things are rather stable to even want to mess with anything but the other health aspects of one's life are JUST as important IMO & I feel it's a Pdoc's RESPONSIBILITY to address those issues since it's their meds that tend to cause the problems.

You are totally right, and type 2 and type 1 diabetes runs in my family so I would want to avoid that entirely. And now that I think about it, the weight gain all started happening just a few weeks after starting the seroquel so hopefully I can get this all straightened out.

I started Seroquel and gained 60 pounds in 6 months, it was so intense! I can relate to your feelings of anxiety/depression over it. Sounds like you're doing everything right, how often are you eating throughout the day?

The problem with psych med weight gain is that you could exercise 24 hours a day & eat nothing & still gain weight (that's an exaggeration), but the problem is that they do mess with the metabolism & sometimes nothing you do can counter the weight gain. I have a friend who struggles with that. No change in diet or change in activity have any effect on her ability to loose weight.

That is why it's so important for pdoc's to take that ALL into consideration with their treatment of their patients & not just give them meds because those are the ones used to treat the MI problem. We are all individuals with individual body reactions to meds & we need to be treated with that as a priority. Our physical reactions to the medications has a great effect on our mental state also on top of what's already going on & it ALL needs to be addressed by the pdoc.
