Internet addiction has been a serious problem for me, and it just gets worse and worse. One day a week ago I lost my phone, which is my only access to the Internet. I kept getting so bored, I looked for things to do around the house. By the end of the day, my apartment was the neatest and cleanest it's been in months.

I had thought that chronic depression was keeping me from doing chores around the place. In reality, I was just constantly preferring to be reading or viewing online than doing anything else. My favorite thing is being in front of the TV with my phone in my hand. For hours on end, I'm totally absorbed watching the two screens.

Right now, I need to leave the house. But I first have to tear myself away from the two screens. I've told myself to ease the transition by finding a podcast I can listen to while I'm out of the house.

I have this weird thing of checking my email, facebook, messenger, this site again and again throughout the day. The thing is, I do not get that much email, I do not post on sites a lot so there are not a lot replies, and there are plenty of things that I could be doing with my time which would be better, both work and non-work. Why am I doing that?
I have implemented inbox zero successfully, so in essence I keep returning to an inbox that most of the time is empty.

I had an internet addiction for close to 20 years. I would spend nearly all my time online, forming empty relationships and just living my whole life online. Since going to jail and to rehab, I was forcibly removed from the internet completely, and even though it was a horrible experience, it was a freeing one. I got to form real life relationships, I spent time getting to know myself outside of the online world, and these days, I feel free from it all together. But I do know what it is like to be in the grips of it.

@LadyShadow - that's inspiring. I'm sorry you went through the tough stuff you went through, but it sounds like you landed on your feet. Sometimes control has to be taken away from us before we realize that there's a better option than what we've been choosing.

@Rose76 It was a hard road for sure to get there. But in all honesty, if I wasn't forced to be isolated from the internet, I wouldn't have stopped. I have been lucky enough to have come out of it, and today when I am home, I find other ways to occupy my time and try to be with more real-life people. Thanks so much for saying its inspiring, it really means a lot. <3
