I don't know what to do my son thinks I'm being mean because I'm concerned about his and a few other boys well being. Last night I found zantrax slim stick powders in his room I wasn't snooping I was helping him look for his spikes because he runs track. The only reason I saw them because they fell out of the blankets when I was helping him look but when I came across them he accuses me of snooping through his stuff but I wasn't. He also said it was protein so I looked on the Internet to read about it and it's a weight loss supplements for 18+ he's 16. He runs cross country, track, and works out so as a concerned mother I asked him about it and to give them to me he told me no he didn't have them and they weren't his it was his "friends" and he was holding them for him and I told him I would talk to his friend then because I'm concerned but he said if I did his friend would never trust him so ok I told him give me them and I won't talk to his friend I'll talk to the coach but he don't want me talking to the coach or else he'll kill himself either way if I talk to his friend or coach. He's lost over 30 pounds his stomach is sunken in and he don't want me talking to his friend or the coach but their under 18 and if they're at a meet and something happens then what? I'm going to know about this and no one else will especially if one of them ends up hospitalized. If I don't say anything they're killing themselves slowly anyway with this weight loss stuff that isn't even FDA approved. What do I do? I need help. Plus he's blaming me because he told me it was "his friends" and I shouldn't be snooping omg! My main concern is that it was his not his friends he ratted him out I didn't accuse his friend of the stuff I found in my sons room.

Hello Concerned Mom72, welcome to Psych Central.

I don't know what these zantrax slim stick powders are but you have every right to be concerned. You are the parent and you need to do what you think is right. I know a 16 year old can get very upset when parent's interfere but as you say this could be serious particularly as you say that he has lost so much weight recently. Do what you feel you need to do, you are looking after your child's health and wellbeing.

Hello, please take him to the doctor. He needs a physical and blood work. Also if he was my son, I would go to the other boy's parents and the coach and the doctor for your son. Sometimes its not easy to be a parent and not a friend, but he has a lifetime to make friends and he only has one mom. I hope you find a conclusion that puts your worries at ease.
