I want to get help. I know I need help. But actually finding a therapist has escaped me. I *finally* picked up the phone and called. Office closed. I tried another number - broke down in tears and got transfered to an appointment desk... and was put on hold. WAited and waited. Went to voice mail. Left a message - no call back.

Why aren't there easier ways to find a freaking therapist?! I'm a pretty high-functioning person who is managing to hold down a steady job and raise four kids and have a marriage, but I can't figure out how to actually make an appointment with a psychiatrist This is getting ridiculous. Am I missing something???

Hi chimera, a therapist and psychiatrist are in high demand. Try your hospital or medical plan affiliated with your insurance. They may have more staff and can better assist you.

Here are some articles at PC about finding a therapist.

I contacted my insurance and got a list of providers and then asked my pdoc for suggestions. You could also ask you GP for recommendations.

I don't have a general doctor right now. Been seeing an OB/GYN over the past few years and just never really bothered to go back to a GP and now I don't have one. I'll try the insurance route. Thank you.

I just looked on the web and found someone using my intuition and experience, both far from infallible, but it worked this time: BACP Find a Therapist - Finding the right therapist

You can also go into Psychology Today, and under "Find a Therapist" put in your zip code, etc.
Thanks for this!

Thank you. I see to be more 'normal' now. But it really was disheartening to finally get up the nerve to pick up the phone and run into dead ends!

I will try both of those searches. Thanks again!
