If I go see a new psychiatrist, will I have to be re-diagnosed? I've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and I believe it's correct, but I don't want to go through the whole diagnosing process again. I just want him/her to help me manage my medications. I'm currently only taking Lamictal, but I'm still having problems sleeping. That's what's making me want to go see one.

Getting sleep may be the single one thing that keeps me in balance. If you are not sleeping or having bad side affects, tell your doctor or psychiatrist when you can see them and tell them what is happening so they can make adjustments.

It is good to have the doc ask you questions to see if they agree with the diagnosis. It is the only way they can prescribe meds accurately.

Many people find compassionate, caring people here at PC. Some people find the forums give them the compassion and empathy they seek. http://forums.psychcentral.com

Should you see a new psychiatrist you will not have to be rediagnosed. They will ask you questions about yourself and your life but that is only for back ground. You could always get your notes transferred from one p'doc to the new one. Ask the new pdoc for what you are seeking.

Hello mandy w, welcome to Psych Central.

Usually the medical notes can be transfered from one doctor to another so it does not necessarily mean that you will have to be rediagnosed, that said people's diagnosis can change over time. Just be honest about your symptoms and the doctor will treat what you are currently coming to them with.

Hey sweety, I just got a new one yesterday, and I just told her my DX and what meds and dosages. That was it. Who is going to fake bipolar to take bipolar meds? We don't even want to take bipolar meds!

You'll be fine. I've never had a pdoc check back for paperwork.

Your new doctor will definitely want to retest you if she/he doesn't i would wonder about the quality of care i'm getting..
