What happens if schizophrenics don't take meds? I mean, would it be that detrimental?

Anyone that is prescribed meds by a psychiatrist or doctor and does not take them is risking a serious episode or breakdown that could result in hospitalization. Taking your meds is the best way to be safe. If having bad side affects, talk to the prescribing doctor.

Hello joshuas mommy, sometimes our illness can make us not want to take medication. At this time your mental health team feel you need medication and it will help to stop the distressing symptoms. Psychotic symptoms (untreated) can make a person very unsafe due to not knowing what you are doing. I want to reassure you that although you might need medication now, it does not mean you will have to take them forever.

I know someone who did not take their medications for their schizophrenia and had very harmful hallucinations and delusions to the point where

I went off my meds once….actually a few times. Happy delusions? Not likely. 6th circle of hell? Yeah I think that would be an accurate description. Sure, you may have happy delusions, but the longer off meds, the worse it could potentially get. People end up burnt out and fried before they even realized how ill they were. I agree with all of the above. If your treatment providers feel that your meds are best in your case, its wise to stay on them.

Before I was on meds I moved 10 times trying to get away from a stalker that didn't exist. Happy delusions it was not. I wish to heaven I had all that money back again and had stopped moving after the first time.

joshuas-mommy, if you have happy delusions that don't hurt anybody off meds, then why ask any of us? Go off your meds and be happy.

I think it really depends on the individual...I really do dislike the idea of one size fits all treatment plans. Especially considering some of the health drugs common drugs for schizophrenia carry...that said some of them really do need medications to keep things under control and are glad to take them. Then some might end up on something that causes them more negative side effects/health risks than helps...and unfortunately some mental health professionals will disregard complaints about such things and refuse to consider different medications(that's gotta be frustrating for people in that situation). But I believe there are alternatives to drug therapy that work for some....Also CBD, a chemical in marijuana is being studied as a potential alternative to traditional anti-psychotics with less side effects/long term health risks so hopefully progress on that will continue.
I already know some studies show many people with psychotic disorders 'self medicate' with cannabis...so its not that terribly surprising one of the chemicals it contains has anti-psychotic properties. But it varies, depends on the individual with schizophrenia what would happen without meds, and what treatments/help would be best for them. Though some in the mental health field which just assume treat all cases the same and just throw the same treatment at everyone rather than really creating an individual treatment plan that helps that 'individual'.
