I've always feared that if I called a hotline they would track me and send police. Is this right? Do they seriously track calls? How or what do I call when I feel really bad? The fact I may be tracked is a huge wall for me. I can't stand police. I've no issues with the law or anything but I don't want ppl knowing where I live and sending police to me for extreme thoughts. Any advice?

Can you call from a phone that isn't yours? Then just don't give them your name or any personal info?
I called a hotline for a friend a year or two ago. Her boyfriend was involved in criminal activity. They told me to call the cops and did not do so themselves. |

Have you considered using the chat box here or PM some of the people on here who have expressed an interest in listening to others? Theoretically someone could track your IP address online, but then they'd have to find out where you live and call the police in your area, and on a website where people from other countries can access the boards, that can be tricky. It's doubtful they're going to be keeping track of everyone who expresses a need to talk when so many people on here are in need of just that. There is also the ask a psychiatrist function that somebody mentioned. I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know how quick the response time is. If your situation is extreme enough to warrant getting immediate feedback as your other post suggests, then perhaps the remote risk of cops swinging by if they feel like you are in danger is worth it to get the help you need.

It depends on the hotline. Some are anonymous. Others will call the authorities if they think it is necessary. I would check their policy before calling (if it is listed on their website for example) or ask first when calling before disclosing any information.

trigger warning-
There is another general type online group called 7cups of tea. I believe it is anonymous-but check, also even if anonymous-not sure if someone mentione d self harm-if they have to take action. You can talk to trained volunteers-for free, there is online cpunseling-not sure if there is a fee for them. Hope it helps. Trigger warning-there is rainn group-for victims of rape, assault, etc, I believe they have anonymous online and phone service, again, double check |

According to this:
Suicide Hotline: What Happens When You Call? - HealthyPlace Will the Police Get Called If I'm Suicidal and Call a Suicide Hotline? This is a tricky question and the answer is neither "yes" nor "no." In the vast majority of cases, no police (or other authority) involvement is required and in the cases where emergency help is needed, suicide hotline staff will make every attempt to gain permission to send them. The goal of a suicide hotline is to help you with your personal crisis and no one-size-fits-all solution is possible. That being said, if you are actively suicidal and threatening to imminently hurt yourself, it is possible that emergency personnel may be called without your permission. While no one likes that scenario, it truly is the best, lifesaving thing an operator can do in a small number of cases. |
