By any chance, is there anyone familiar with the topic who could describe the current scientific thinking on this subject?

More specifically, are the physical effects at all well understood? What about treatment, if necessary? Is it even accepted as a real condition?

I don't know much about andropause, but I can tell you that I've certainly witnessed it in men I know well - including my husband. I am absolutely sure it is a very real medical issue.

I appreciate the response. The information I found on the internet treats it as just the some total of common hormone changes that occur with age but I find that to be lacking.

In my case, I have an odd story.

Up until about 4 years ago, I found it absolutely impossible to quit smoking. For 30 years I tried to quit over and over, used patches, gum, lozenges, Zaiban, sunflower seeds, everything to quit and I couldn't last even a day with no smokes most of the time and I certainly never lasted more than a few days. Then something just switched off in me and I no longer had the addiction. I don't know why it happened, but I am more or less forced to assume it was due to some fundamental physiological change because at the time, I was in a really bad place mentally, a time when most people find the stress too much to be able to drop a crutch like smoking cigarettes.

I think that's entirely plausible, Rebound. Reminds me of a former boss of mine...she went through menopause and lost her taste for chocolate, which she had just loved before.

short version yes this medical condition exists. Andropause is male menopause.. a time in an adult males life where their body no longer produces what is needed for reproduction...a decrease in testosterone, a decrease production in sperm, ...like female menopause this can cause a man to be fatigued\needing to nap \sleep more or longer, decline in sexual urges\sex drive, can cause medically induced mood swings and medically induced depression, hot flashes, ...

treatment for it is...hormone replacement therapy (medication in the form of testosterone shots, pills or patches.)

my suggestion is contact your medical doctor, they will be able to prescribe the testosterone for you after doing some blood work and a sperm count to verify whether you are in male menopause (Andropause) or not. they will also have information pamplets on this medical problem most males go through once they hit their 50's but in rare cases can happen sooner or later depending upon ones own medical health.
Thanks for this!
